24fps

March 20, 2007

24fps, MCC’s comm. dept. film fest, happened from 14-17 March. I was able to catch only the last day of it because of college. šŸ˜ And even then, only three movies, coz I had to go see Sriya in the evening. V, the bum, left half way since her mum would get pissed if she wasted the whole day! šŸ˜› Now, the movies.

Meghe Dhake Tara (Ritwik Ghatak – 1960)

The tragic story of a daughter of a middle-class family in Bengal. It’s about how everyone takes advantage of her patient and accommodating nature and how she silently suffers, while trying to make everyone happy. A bland movie, with powerful script in parts. The direction is very postcard-ish in most of the movie, typical of the period. It’s a slow movie but keeps you watching, if only to see what finally happens.

Full Metal Jacket (Stanley Kubrick – 1987)

I watched it for the third time at the fest. One of my Kubrick favourites – about American troops in Vietnam. Hardcore, man, hardcore (Donlon) .

Rhapsody in August (Akira Kurosawa – 1991)

An old widow of a man killed in the Nagasaki bombings, takes care of her four grandchildren for the summer. Through the course of their vacation, the family learns about relatives in the states, and the death of her husband is brought to fore again. With a theme as powerful as this and Kurosawa being the director, the movie could have had a much greater impact on the audience. May be I feel this coz it was interrupted and then resumed. It’s a good movie, fantastic in parts, but the story refuses to engage.

It was goot fun! šŸ˜€
